A redesigned hinge will be used on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 to conceal the display crease

One of the primary issues with Samsung foldable is that their main displays still have an obvious crease, but that may change with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold5. According to a recent claim from Naver News, Samsung will use a novel waterdrop hinge mechanism on the next Z Fold model to do away with the famed screen crease and enable the display to fold fully flat.

The redesigned hinge mechanism prevents the crease between the two sides of the panel by having the folding display take the shape of a droplet inside the hinge body. Similar strategies have already been used with the Moto Razr and Oppo Find N series. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 smartphones continue to have U-shaped hinges that have visible creases and can’t close flat. On the next Z Fold5, Samsung is anticipated to maintain the IPX8 water-resistant grade.
